| Topeka is the capital city of the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Shawnee County. Three ships of the US Navy have been named USS Topeka in honor of the city.. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 127,473. Board of Education of Topeka, which overturned Plessy vs. The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, and Wabaunsee counties, had an estimated population of 230,824 in the year 2009. It is situated along the Kansas River in the central part of Shawnee County, located in northeast Kansas, in the Central United States.
